[Inspo] This guy’s videos taught me how to tailor my entire wardrobe, and it completely changed my life.

Posted: 25 May 2019 03:37 PM PDT

For starters, I was in a bad place for a lot of personal reasons. I've always been a thinner guy which has affected my confidence with women and just kind of life in general. I stumbled across this guys channel called Stylish Dad and he teaches guys how to use a sewing machine and tailor their own clothes.

I thought it was kinda weird at first, I really did. But after a few videos I was hooked. It's crazy because I didn't have any intention of ever actually trying to tailor myself, I have no background in it at all. But I really wish I would have started sooner. I've been watching his content for a few months now and here's a few videos that have helped me the most that I think can help a lot of guys too.

Tapering Pants https://youtu.be/bLyEOnAA5zk This is something that not only looks good but is something that I was convinced only a tailor could do. It took me a LONG time to actually try this one out, and I screwed it up the first time. But I tried again and my trousers came out perfectly, like...they became my favorite ones. I never wore them before and now I wear them all the time. Had to go out and buy some more in a different color and do the same thing a few weeks later actually.

Finding a sewing machine https://youtu.be/5wVWfui7LGI - This one helped me because not only did I not know where to look but I didn't know what to look for. I ended up finding a used Kenmore machine based on his tips on what to look for. Super cheap and effective. Anything made in the last like 50 years or so should be fine. Maybe not for jeans or outerwear but for your basics older machines can usually work.

Tailoring a Hoodie https://youtu.be/-bsJjjO-33E - Not only am I a thinner guy, but I'm taller too. So to get a hoodie to fit properly means I'm going to drown in it. I like a slimmer fit for my sweatshirts and this video showed me that I can make any of my baggy ones fit a lot slimmer pretty easily.

Shortening a T-Shirt and Making The Sleeves Tighter https://youtu.be/Rt9eYjHC0yQ https://youtu.be/WaT-QUC4P-g He made two separate videos on these topics. He had another few on taking in the sides of a T-shirt but these two were much more helpful for me. I had a T-shirt that I bought online that failed to mention that it was like 100 mm too long. It sat in my closet forever never to be seen from again. I thought "might as well give it a shot, never gonna wear it anyway". It came out good, not great but good. Definitely a shirt I can wear in public. If I had to do it again I would practice more but no one would ever know I shortened it myself in a million years.

Hemming Jeans https://youtu.be/EJO18-JPLTo I hate long jeans, despite the fact that I'm taller I STILL find pants that are too long somehow. The advertised size is way different than how it looks. He made a video on hemming jeans where you remove the original hem and make a new one. He made another where you can keep the hem, but he said that he didn't like that method and I actually didn't either. To me it looks kinda ugly I dunno. When you keep the original hem it kinda creates an uncomfortable flap that you have to deal with. Making a new hem eliminates that problem, and was my go to method for a pair of jeans that needed resizing. I dunno, maybe you will like the original hem method, to each their own.

Copying a T-Shirts Measurements https://youtu.be/m8qOaS5YDto Wait what? I know right. I had tailored one of my shirts by following his tutorials and everything was all good. Now I love the shirt, and this video explains how you can take that shirt and make sort of a template from it. You take a large piece of paper and create a "paper shirt" if you will and then just put that template on all the new shirts you buy. The cool thing about that method is you don't need to measure your shirts anymore, which can be kinda time consuming. I made one and now feel like I'm manufacturing perfectly fitting tees for myself, it's pretty cool.

Tailoring a Jacket https://youtu.be/G6QlJrDB0HY Yes, you can tailor outerwear yourself too. I actually bought a cool bomber jacket specifically so that I could tailor it, as opposed to tailoring things I already had. It wasn't a super thick jacket like a thick winter coat, it's pretty good for cooler weather. I had a bit of trouble as I didn't have the proper needle, so I had to go out and get one. My machine also kinda struggled a bit compared to tailoring a t shirt but it made it through. His jacket was kinda similar to mine for a reference, and it's kinda too warm for it now but it will be great once fall rolls around.

He has a lot of videos explaining other things like what kind of needle and thread to use and how to use a seam ripper in case you mess up, which I do a lot, and you will too. They're all pretty in depth and thorough, and think they would help a lot of you. I found his channel back in like January when he was active here and haven't seen him around much. Someone said he was banned so I guess that would explain it. Anyway, hope these help you guys like they helped me!
