tHiS iSnT sTrEeTwEaR: where do we go from here Posted: 20 Oct 2020 04:25 AM PDT This community has arrived at its next turning point and for those of you that have been here for a while I'm sure it's no surprise. Without getting too misty eyed and going on about 'the old days', this subreddit has gone through many changes and cycled through focuses and formats as most communities do. With the newly found growth this community is fast outgrowing its current format and becoming a much more energetic community. This isn't inherently a good thing or a bad thing but it is different and it's something the moderation team hasn't done a great job of keeping up with - something we strive to correct. One of the first orders of business is the addition of new moderators. An application post will go up soon and I would encourage everyone to apply - it's a truly enjoyable experience and you will quickly form bonds and learn new skills. One of the other important orders of business is working out a strategy to deal with the increasingly blurred line between streetwear and other flavours of fashion. This is not a new challenge and we have tried a few approaches to this - unmoderated free reign, megathreads, megathreads with specific allow-listed users, and I'm sure others I have forgotten. Not all of this was focused on this specific problem but they have been important in shaping the way the community viewed WDYWT content which is the primary contentious topic. The current approach of allowing most outfits doesn't seem to be working and there is growing unhappiness mostly in the form of comments calling out fits for not being streetwear. Beyond these outfits being frustrating to see for those that don't want to see them an argument could be made that they make the sub less focused and therefore less enjoyable. Conversely it can be argued that the entire point of streetwear is to blur the line, they provide a means of innovation, or that streetwear isn't a defineable concept and therefore isn't enforceable. No matter what your opinion is, I think we can all agree that making, reading, or receiving these comments isn't a pleasant experience. There are few ways forward but it's important that users can share their opinions on how this should be handled. The mods have proposed a variety of solutions:
