A quote that concerns the whole "Is this trend dead, should I wear this" issue

Posted: 31 Jul 2017 10:30 AM PDT

"I believe that fashion isn't about what is trendy or no longer trendy. Fashion is a form of expression that every one of us manifests in a unique way. The way we dress says a lot about what we feel and think inside. I therefore advise every person to wear pieces that help you express how you feel, and not just follow general trends."

-Gaby Charbachy

I read this in the Projecteurs Magazine, and I think it was the best formulated opinion about this insecurity people have whenever they're considering wearing something different on this sub and tend to conform to what the majority wears.

What do you people think about this quote, and what's your whole opinion and comment to this issue?

Fit Battle SS17 Finals Results + User Input - Streetwear

Fit Battle SS17 Finals Results + User Input - Streetwear

Fit Battle SS17 Finals Results + User Input

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 02:05 PM PDT

Over the last five months 152 users have submitted entries for the SS17 Fit Battle. We are now down to the final two users. /u/CJLeaf and /u/notjaron, who deserve a special congratulations for participating in all eight rounds.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the management of this contest and to the users for submitting.

The SS17 Fit Battle winner is:

/u/CJLeaf by 6 votes (51.7% of the vote)

As for granting a custom flair to the winner, /u/CJLeaf can submit his image to the mods via modmail. Or just do it himself.

User Input & Future Fit Battles

To hold us over until the FW17 Fit Battle we would like to hold a themed fit battle in the interim. Current ideas for the theme include avant garde, innovation, techwear, and more which can be found in the survey below.

We're using this themed fit battle to test a couple new changes to the seasonal ones.

First off to signup a user will be required to submit a fit. That fit will then be judged by moderators as fitting into the theme and if so that user will be entered into the fit battle.

Limiting the competition to 8 or 16 of the highest quality entries could keep a higher level of quality throughout.

And a schedule will be made before the fit battle begins so that users will know their timeframe for submitting the fit beforehand.

Please fill out this survey so that we can get feedback on these ideas and decide on the theme for the next fit battle

Once again, thanks to all the users who have participated in the SS17 Fit Battle.

Tips to Surviving Posting Fits on /r/streetwear

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 03:00 PM PDT

I've been a lurker here for the past month. I'm new to streetwear and want to get a better understanding of it to improve my style. So I started posting in the WDYWT public thread. I feel the WDYWT is a good resource to improve your fits and understanding of streetwear in general.

It was daunting at first. I'd like to share my takeaways for anyone curious or hesitant about posting fits in the WDYWT public thread.

This may be common knowledge, but hopefully it will encourage others to participate more.

  1. When someone gives a critique on your fit, don't take it personally. Ask them to explain further. If they can back up their critique, then you've learned something new and can potentially apply it in the future. If they can't, then you can probably disregard their criticism.

  2. Realize that WDYWT comments and /r/streetwear represent a specific group of people interested in this style of fashion. This group is knowledgeable, but it's not the final say on streetwear. However, I believe it can give you a good foundation, as I had little knowledge of streetwear before coming here. I still have a long way to go.

  3. Be willing to try new things with fashion. Streetwear isn't my first style of choice. This is evident in my struggle to wear a fit that can be categorized as streetwear. In the process of trying to put together streetwear fits, I've been exposed to new looks and styles. What works for /r/malefashionadvice may not work for /r/streetwear. And that's OK. This process has given me a broader appreciation for the different fashions out there.

  4. Post fits. I doubt that I would be able to progress in my streetwear journey without sharing my fits. It gives me a visual record of my fits and any feedback that accompanies them. This helps to compare my various fits. Also to discern why one fit worked another didn't. Keep in mind points 1 and 2 when given criticism.

  5. Have fun. There's no point to this if it's not enjoyable. I admit frustration at times, trying to figure out a fit. But I feel that's part of the process. I'm still working on putting together a good streetwear fit, but the process is part of the fun.

The /r/streetwear community has been great and has treated me kindly since I first started posting. Just don't take things personally, realize there are other streetwear communities out there, be open to new things, post fits, and have fun.

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback in the comments. I've added the following tips:

Amendment 1: Take decent fit pics. Show your fit from head to toe, so viewers can see your whole fit. Here are tips from /r/femalefashionadvice on taking better fit pics. The tips can apply to anyone, regardless of gender.

Amendment 2: When given criticism, think it over and determine if it's something that fits the look you're going for. Depending on who you ask, there are rules to follow in fashion. If you want to follow the established rules, you may have to change your fit to fall within the rules. If you're more about doing your own thing, then determine if the criticism given to you will help you achieve the look you want. In the end, dress how you want, but it may help being able to explain why you dress the way you do, if sharing your style with other fashion-minded individuals.

/r/Streetwear Census Results

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 05:38 AM PDT

Thank you to everyone that participated in the 2017 /r/streetwear census.

I've summarised the results below - with some of the questions it can be hard to get an accurate reading of what were the common responses, as there may have been 2,000 different responses

Total responses: 2,104

Personal Demographics

Gender

  • 94% Male

  • 5% Female

This is as expected - streetwear is typically geared towards, and adopted by, males. The subreddit sees very little female representation.

Orientation

  • 89% Heterosexual

  • 8% Bisexual

Not much to say. Sounds about right, maybe a lower number of people picking homosexual than expected.

Relationship status

  • 75% Single

  • 23% In a relationship

This seems typical of the subreddit, if not a higher number in a relationship than expected. To be fair we're all H A N D S O M E so how can the ladies resist right?

Income (USD)

  • 28% Prefer not to say

  • 46% 0-9,000

  • 11% 10-19,00

  • 7% 20-39,000

Most of our users would not be financially independent, and I'm sure many don't have jobs at all. Very few would be considered high paid.

Age

  • 38% 18-20

  • 35% 16-17

  • 14% 21-25

  • 10% Under 16

This really goes to show who we're working with - most of our users are young. We have a very low number of older age users, so probably don't expect the most thorough and mature responses all the time. Remember who you're working with. Typically, the sub is really good at this despite the relative young age and we don't see too much bullshit.

Location

  • 68% North America

  • 10% Europe (Not UK)

  • 8% UK

  • 7% Australia

Most of our users are from USA as you would expect and can typically while browsing the sub. Aussie boys getting on the map tho.

Fashion

Time as a member of /r/streetwear?

  • 29% 6-12 months

  • 28% 12-24 months

  • 14% 3-6 months

  • 12% 1-3 months

  • 11% 24+ months

Fairly well distributed - most users have spent a moderate amount of time on the subreddit. This also shows that typically when a user says they like the way the subreddit used to be they don't have a clue what they're talking about as there is less than 11% of the sub thats been around longer than me (that answered the survey). This really shows through in a lot of the rule change requests we recieve - for example with WDYWT threads, most users haven't been around for the 3 different systems we've employed, and don't have much to compare it to. That isn't to say that they're wrong, and can't create their own well informed opinion.

Other fashion forums used?

  • 54% None

  • 22% 4chan

  • 7% KTT

  • 5% The Basement

For most people, /r/streetwear is their only source of fashion news and discussion. For around 40% they participate in some other form of fashion related forum who9ch is great for us - this means users are getting opinions and ideas from a variety of sources.

Favourite type of post?

  • 47% WDYWT

  • 34% Discussion

  • 7% Review

  • 6% News

  • 6% Art

The WYDWT is the most popular post - this brings up the question of what the current state of the subreddit is, and if it should change. I believe the growing whitelist will have a positive impact as it continues to get more users on it to create a steady flow of high quality fits.

Time spent on fashion related websites per day

  • 38% 30-60 minutes

  • 26% 0-30 minutes

  • 23% 60-120 minutes

  • 8% 120-180 minutes

Most users get a 'quick-fix' or otherwise browse the subreddit for under an hour - this means that quicker to digest posts may get more attention. For example, standalone WDYWT threads are really easy to look at and don't take up time to read a bunch of text to get the benefit of the post.

**How would you rate your knowledge about fashion?

  • 1 1.6%

  • 2 16.9%

  • 3 48.4%

  • 4 30.1%

  • 5 3%

Most users believe they have a moderate/high understanding of fashion as a whole. Very few users believe to know very little, or a lot. This is probably a good middle ground.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

  • 5 (252)

  • 6 (235)

  • 4 (199)

  • 8 (177)

  • 7 (168)

  • 10 (165)

  • 3 (162)

  • A variety of other responses. I fucked up by making this a text box.

Most users have between 4 and 10 pairs of shoes. This should have been multi choice, shit was so hard to read easily.

Average Yearly Spending (USD)

  • 32% 500-1000

  • 31% 1000-5000

  • 24% 200-500

  • 5% 200 or less

  • 5% 5000-10000

Most users spend a moderate amount, but not enough to be copping multiple 'hype' pieces every year. Tying back into the income question, and age question, most users will not have the disposable funds to be buying expensive clothing regularly and may go for more basic pieces as a result. And I'm sure many users are working off their parents budgets.

Do you have a skincare routine?

  • 52% Yes

  • 48% No

Half the sub does, half doesn't. I would encourage those that don't have one already to have a look at /r/skincareaddiction. If you have skin issues this will help you endlessly. It's just another part of looking good. Take care of yourself, you're worth it.

Do you style your hair?

  • 68% Yes

  • 32% No

30% of our users do not style their hair - this may be due to the haircut (long, or very short), or just a lack of interest. If you don't already have a haircut you are happy with, check out /r/malehairadvice. A good haircut can change your entire look.

Should people that don't skate be allowed to wear thrasher?

  • 78% Yes

  • 22% No

A majority of the sub believes you should - bringing this up is a great way to start an argument on /r/streetwear.

Why should/shouldn't people that don't skate be allowed to wear thrasher?

The responses in favour can be summarised to 'who gives a fuck, wear what you want'

The responses in favour of burning non-skater thrasher wearers can be summarised to 'poser, it's made for skaters'

We had over 1300 unique responses to this question, so gaining an accurate understanding of the responses is very difficult.

How is /r/streetwears's friendliness to beginners?

  • 1 5%

  • 2 24%

  • 3 40%

  • 4 24%

  • 5 7%

Most users believe the sub is quite beginner friendly - I would say the sub can be hostile, but at the end of the day it's most peoples first exposure to the style. Most of the content is beginner level, so we need to be accomodating where we can.

Who is the best mod

  • 100% MrRikka

Duh

How satisfied are you with the moderation of /r/streetwear?

  • 1 2%

  • 2 1%

  • 3 2%

  • 4 5%

  • 5 10%

  • 6 11%

  • 7 25%

  • 8 27%

  • 9 8%

  • 10 8%

Most users are quite satisfied, although I would love to see more responses in the 8+ range next time we do this. We can't please everyone but we do our best to keep things fair and smooth.

Other Feedback

To the ~150 users that said something similar to 'love me rikka' - I do. I love you all <3

Lots of comments asked to abholish the wdywt thread again. I remain unconvinced cause that shit sucked when it was like that. 0% discussion, 100% fits.

Photography vs. Fits

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 05:13 PM PDT

Let's discuss the influence photography has on how others perceive our fits and whether or not we should look past good/bad photography when judging fits.

It is evident that good photography with good cameras, good locations, good lighting, and good filters has the power to make your fit look a lot cooler by adding a level of drama, detail, and appeal to your aesthetic.

Other times, good photography problematically detracts from the actual fit itself, thereby over-embellishing an otherwise bad, basic, or awkward fit.

What do you guys think about photography in regards to fits? Do you not allow it to affect your perception on fit, or do you think photography should be considered while evaluating fits?

All this and more to be discussed below. Thanks

Help with jeans and my nuts

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 11:24 AM PDT

What's good guys, could use your help. I'm looking for some distressed denim that's slim, tapered and doesn't destroy my testicles and thighs. I don't live remotely close to any stores where I can just go try shit on. I'm 5"10, 155, and typically wear a 31 waist comfortably. Im looking at the MNML M1's and they look exactly like what I'm searching for, but the legs in them seem hella long with a super short crotch. Any suggestions? Anyone my size got recommendations or tried the MNML M1?

So, I was in the Subway at like 2 AM and a man and his girlfriend both had on these shoes. They were orange and looked like NMDs, but the material looked more 'plush' and thicker, maybe leather? They also didn't have panels or stripes in the panels. They were an orange color, looked really nice. Any ideas?

[Discussion] Where does one go to buy black jeans?

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 08:25 PM PDT

Unfortunately it's time to let my old pair of distressed black jeans go and buy a new one.

But I do not know where to start.

Can anyone recommend me stores that sell a nice pair? I prefer the ankle area to be tapered.

The jeans do not have to be distress'd as I enjoy doing that myself, I guess the taper near the ankle is all that's important to me as I love that tapered "stacks" look .

Need help on putting together a fit?

Posted: 30 Jul 2017 10:19 PM PDT

Ok, so I'm from r/sneakers and I just purchased a pair of sneakers, the Kith x Adidas Ultra Boost Mid. Here's the link to what I'm talking about, https://www.flightclub.com/ultra-boost-mid-kith-multi-white-800098?nosto=productpage-nosto-1. I just wasn't sure what to wear these with, as with most my shoes, (Yeezy's, Jordan's, etc) I can just wear joggers. These just don't seem to go well with joggers. I wanted to wear them with like a dark denim pair of jeans and like a grey shirt. I found these jeans, https://kith.com/collections/kith/products/kith-classics-varick-washed-denim-black, that I really like, but they are to expensive. My budget for the jeans would be like 100$, so I don't know if there is any similar ones for like 80$ish. I really like this shirt, https://kith.com/products/john-elliot-mercertee-co-mix-grey, but wasn't sure if it would go with the jeans. I know nothing about fashion. Lastly, do you know any sweaters or jackets that would go with the shoes, maybe something that was the same color as them. Thanks in advance guys!
