The 5 F's of Fashion, a Mini Blurb on the Basics

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 02:35 PM PST

Hey guys, massive legend here. Wanted to impart some radical information for the youth who are just stepping in to this community, as I like to think I have my head on somewhat straight. I'm by no means an expert, but I wanted to let you guys in on some things I think really makes you look good, and this sub is growing super fast, so maybe if you're a fresh face this can all seem less daunting.

THE FIRST F: FEELING YOURSELF

This was originally 'Confidence', but it didn't start with F. Every fit looks so much better when you wear it with confidence, and it really shows. The same goes when someone is being worn by their clothes and looks awkward. Maybe the silhouette doesn't compliment his body type, or he's just afraid of wearing skinny jeans because his dad will think he's gay (been there done that). I'd find a healthy balance between going out of your comfort zone and something that makes you feel you. Here's a stupid article that says everything I'm trying to better: FEELING YOURSELF And Here's 1 more by Vogue.

THE SECOND F: FITNESS

Working out sucks. But it's something you just HAVE to do, in my opinion. Everything looks good on a dude that looks like he can snap you in half, and to make things even better, it's good for you. I don't have any links to give you, so I'm just going to fart out my workout philosophy, which is just consistency and no soda. Those two alone can help you lose weight or gain muscle. For putting together workouts I'd find something for pure strength gain, cardio, and muscle building. All are helpful.

THE THIRD F: FUNDAMENTALS

Ironically on my little thingie on fundamentals, I say fundamentals. Learn the color wheel. Learn silhouettes. Learn all the "yeah no shit" basics, as while they might seem stupid, they can have a huge impact on how you see fashion and how you perceive outfits. It's painful, but knowing how to walk before you run is what I'm getting at. Here's an awesome guide on matching colors: FUNDAMENTALS

THE FOURTH F: FLOUNDERING

The hardest part to starting something is the first step. You're gonna struggle, things will look awful (speaking from experience), and you'll feel like a dumbass. This is all necessary to growing as a clothes guy and as a person. It can hurt when you think you like fresh as hell and then your dad asks if you're going to see you boyfriend (IT'S 2018 DAD, LET ME WEAR MY SKINNY JEANS, IT'S OKAY TO BE GAY), but it's integral to learning and developing. You can't know how to look good if you don't know how to look like a dork. This subreddit is a bit of a rough place to learn like this, but if you're willing to, you can figure it out.

THE FINAL F: FUN

This is the cop out rainbow and sunshine ending. If you're not having fun, why do this? The act of wearing trendy clothes shouldn't be detrimentally stressful, and it should be enjoyable to discuss fashion and not terrifying. Your sense of being shouldn't rely on fake internet points, but rather your own confidence. Make sure that you have a reason to do this, and pull something every time you post. I do the same to learn every time, and I get joy out of my suffering.

THANKS FOR READING

:) TL;DR: Sidebar pls mods

I hope this gave you a little idea on what you might want to think about while wearing your fire fits. I also want to leave this post with a bajillion inspo albums, this can help you find a style you might like, and some of them are just pretty to look at. LINK

Do y’all ever feel like assholes wearing expensive clothes

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 07:24 PM PST

EDIT: I think I gave off the impression that I feel much stronger about this topic than I really do. I'm not saying I feel very badly whenever I wear nice clothes, this is just something that crosses my mind occasionally and I wanted to see if anyone's had a similar experience. Everyone knows tears dry quicker on Versace pillows (if uk where that's from you a real one)

In public I have no problem flexing on rando's, but it's different with school. It's especially weird for me because my family is middle class and most of the kids I know/ go to school with are extremely wealthy. Despite me being middle class my family's income is probably below avg for the school. Maybe it is the fact that everyone at my school already has so much money so they stigmatize and look down upon the kids who flaunt it. So when I wear my margielas that took me years of trying to convince my parents to let me cop, and even then it was only cause they were at a heavily discounted price, I feel like I'm looked at differently and lumped in as one of "those kids" when I'm really the furthest thing from those pretentious pricks that wear the newest off white and heron Preston TO SCHOOL like it's a fashion show or some shit. Or when I hear my friend who probably has enough money to buy my family say to someone "I hate those people that only care about brands" while I sit there with no money to throw in for dinner but wearing a $120 commes des garcon shirt feeling like a total jackass. Somehow I end up feeling like the materialistic spoiled kid even though almost all the people I'm interacting with have more money than me they just don't care about clothes. And unlike those materialistic kids I'm not buying stuff solely because of hype but because I actually like it and it fits my style. I guess the same way I see someone wearing supreme and automatically take them for a clout chasing loser, someone might see me in my margielas and take me for a spoiled kid.

In summary -I feel bad wearing expensive shit to school or out with friends sometimes b/c besides a few of my friends that fw the culture when most people see me in expensive shit they aren't impressed cause they don't know about clothing so instead they just see another "rich kid" showing of their wealth when in reality I don't have that wealth either.

[x-post from mfa][inspo] Hedi's dead: a 2018 inspo album for a post-slp boi

Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:17 AM PST

Link

I figured I would share my inspo album for how I want my style to evolve going forward into 2018 . I'm really over the whole generic SLP look, especially with the direction Vaccarello is taking (or not taking, really) the brand, as I'm sure many others are. This album is inspo for the direction I intend to derive my style from there, focusing a lot more on fabric drape, looser silhouettes, and interesting prints/fabric textures.

The main brands I'm going to be looking to are Undercover, Number (N)ine, Vetements, Yohji femme, Takahiromiyashita, and Ann D.

At risk of overexplaining, I'll let the album speak for itself
