I used think I was a fan of streetwear until I discovered this sub

Posted: 02 Feb 2018 02:19 AM PST

Now I have no idea what streetwear even is anymore. Apparently if its black/dark coloured and is reasonably well fitted without being 'skinny' and the models look as though its a burden to be living in their mid/upper class bubble then it's streetwear.

What does streetwear mean to you guys?

Why is every single fit on the front page here ONLY by the same handful of users?

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 11:56 AM PST

Don't believe me? Click on a fit that is on the front page right now.

Then, on their profile, Sort by: "top". You'll see that all of their top posts are fits from this sub.

Why is it that we only upvote the same handful of users? Sure, their fits are good, but I rarely ever see a different user who tries posting their own fit make the front page.

The mob mentality and the unsaid "whitelisted" system here is horrible. Why can't we just accept if a fit is good or a tiny bit hypebeast?

Instead, /r/steetwear is just high fashion that would get you annihilated anywhere (because 3/4 of them look fucking stupid). I love this sub, I just want to see some user diversity here!

[OC] [Discussion] [Long Post] Why Elon Musk's tunneling project, The Boring Company, should should start a streetwear label

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 07:44 AM PST

Throwaway Account

I wasn't sure of what to think when I saw Elon Musk tweet an announcement regarding the pre-sale of a fucking flamethrower. A good deal of shock, but also a vague fusion of excitement and anticipation. But what does it really mean that Elon made and successfully sold a flamethrower? Are there grander implications here? Of course there are.

Walls of text forthcoming.

The Context

Quick rundown. Elon Musk is Elon Musk. He was an early investor in Paypal and made a shit ton of money out of the venture along with the rest of the so-called "Paypal Mafia." This money was eventually funneled into two main projects that he considered to be truly important to the future of humanity: attempting to wean the world off of non-renewable energy and turning mankind into a multi-planetary species. Enter Tesla and SpaceX. Everyone knows what they are, people are generally into what they're about. Then, you have Elon's weird step-child, SolarCity, trying to normalize solar panels across the United States--another push into guiding the world out of self-destructive energy consumption.

The coup de grace and the reason for this post is not any of these enormous endeavors, but rather something that Elon has stated occupies only 2% of his time: The Boring Company. The idea is straightforward, introduce a brand new form of incredibly efficient and effective transportation by building tunnels underneath the earth's surface. If these tunnels can be swiftly built at low cost, then the resulting network of subterranean roads can decrease surface level congestion by a factor of holy fuck, while also allowing for underground speeds of up to 160 miles per hour.

So. All that said:

The Reasoning

The case I'd like to make today is clear in the title, but I'll repeat it here: Elon Musk, and The Boring Company in particular, should take the leap into the world of fashion, particularly streetwear and techwear. The reason is, I believe, simple and can be broken into multiple parts. The gist of it all is this: The Boring Company (hereafter referred to as TBC) is perfectly positioned to push the envelope in full force with an arsenal of high-quality, utilitarian clothing and accessories, all supported by its rich background in science and industrial design.

The heart of why I believe TBC should participate in the zeitgeist of streetwear is rooted in what it already embodies. Check out their website. The language and brand identity of the company is surprisingly relaxed and casual, especially considering that it's a company that deals with government contracts and cold, hard science. Much like Elon's Twitter account, this page shows a colloquial and personable consumer-facing side to what is otherwise a very dense and complicated project. The ease of the simplification of TBC's ideas, coupled with its more open, human qualities, is indicative of casual and accessible company that knows how to navigate both the realms of science and fashion; furthermore, I'd argue that these qualities suggest that TBC has the right presence and just daring enough of an identity to break into foreign territory. To add to that, the fact that TBC is actually a company with its foundations in science/design gives it automatic clout in the realm of techwear and offers leverage as a serious contender in the space. TBC can create products knowing that its consumers will instinctively trust its offerings.

Then there's the matter of the flamethrower and its predecessor, the hat. When I first saw the flamethrower, I was inspired to take a look at TBC's website and found that they had sold fifty-fucking-thousand branded dad hats back in late 2017. If they could slap their logo on a canvas hat and move 50,000 units, then there was definitely promise beyond fucking tunnels.

If the hat was the smoking gun, the flamethrower was the nail in the coffin. Brutally in-your face and yet precisely designed, the device was the perfect fusion of faux-utility and hyper-flex. And it shows in sales. As of my writing this, TBC has sold out all 20,000 units; and this isn't just some cheap, chump-change gimmick either--these things will set you back $500. The charm found in these flamethrowers is highly reminiscent of Supreme's assortment of accessories and products. With the right marketing and a strong attention to detail, I believe that TBC can release a suite of practical goods, such as umbrellas, speakers, and furniture with successful results.

I think one of the last important things to note is that TBC has incredible star power behind it in the form of Elon. Our reality's version of Iron Man is not one to remain under the radar, and his attachment to the brand offers immense momentum that will undoubtedly help get the ball rolling if/when everything kicks off.

In addition to all of these points I brought up, I believe that there is an "x-factor" of sorts, which is to say that TBC has a lot of attributes that I can't really quantify or logically argue for. For example, I think TBC's brand positioning is just novel enough to make the shift into fashion. Why? It's a gut feeling, and I recognize the faulty logic, but I stand by it.

Still, with all this laid out, the question remains: "How in the hell does one make this happen?"

The Process

Fucking easy.

Step One: Elon steps the fuck away from TBC's fashion endeavors. The dude does not need to spend his time involved with this outside of product endorsement and the occasional photoshoot (this is a joke I think). He's trying to put people on Mars and TBC is 2% of his time anyway so he should just let this side-project do its thing and turn into a cash cow autonomously.

Step Two: TBC hires a creative director and a proper design team. This can be widely publicized or kept under the radar--both options present their pros and cons depending on what the ultimate goal is. I'd recommend keeping it low-key until Step Four for just the right amount of shock factor.

Step Three: Under the direction of the creative director, TBC begins to gradually drop a few basic clothing items. Graphic tees and maybe a hip pack--stuff rides the border between pretty neat and pretty uninteresting.

Step Four: Then comes the first power-move into the fashion scene. Boom. Capsule collection. Super limited release. Some more-abstract/less-branded graphic tees, maybe a jacket or two. There needs to be an item or two here that really stands out and catches attention. Perhaps a really dope piece of outerwear and a branded shovel, a la Supreme. In my opinion, a key factor to consider in the capsule collection is the material(s) used to create the clothes. A company like TBC needs to leverage its unique position as a company rooted in science, and so it should capitalize on high-quality gear with practical purposes; think Gore-Tex and similar materials with strong presences in techwear. Ultimately, If Elon puts some of his famous PR magic into the release, then the right publications and communities get involved and set the foundation for the release of a proper seasonal collection.

Step Five: Riding off the momentum of the capsule collection, TBC announces a shoe collaboration with Nike. r/streetwear goes wild and TBC suddenly goes viral beyond the fashion community, getting serious media coverage and recognition from regular people like your cousin's ex-boyfriend that still texts you about how cool Volcom is.

Step Six: This is the grand slam: TBC releases a spring/summer collection. If everything up until now was just the pre-game, a proper seasonal collection officially elevates TBC to the status of an actual fashion house. No longer is this all just a gimmick--we're in the big leagues now.

Step Seven: From here on out, a lot more options are available and I don't have the time or energy to delve into it all. Maybe a collaboration with ACRNM? Or a co-sign by a big celebrity, like Guy Fieri (again, I'm pretty sure this is a joke?) I'm sure the creative director can figure it out moving forward.

The Conclusion

Ultimately, the true and final purpose of TBC is to make a new form of transportation accessible to the masses; streetwear is, in the end, just an afterthought. Still, in this hypothetical scenario, fashion acts a potential vector for change that is relatively accessible to Musk; to leverage its potential is to make an attempt for true cultural impact. It also doesn't hurt that it might be a good source of cash to fund other projects. Furthermore, such a jarring move from a tech company might show other brands and companies how they can incorporate fashion/design into their product line and become ever-more present in the lives of the average consumer.

Am I being super naive and simplistic in my approach? Yup.

Should Elon do this? Definitely. Will he? Probably not. But that's okay

It's still fun to think about, isn't it?

What are your thoughts?

*RINGS* MEGA-LIST. Where to buy fly rings and embellish those fancy digits!

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 11:39 PM PST

I was browsing around for some statement rings (it started out that I wanted a particular ouroboros ring) and I ended up going a little crazy, so compiled this list of various sellers for you guys. I'm not familiar with hype-beast jewelry so apologies for lack of Supreme, Yeezy etc.

If you're going to be wearing multiple rings at once, I recommend first deciding which metal scheme you'll want to go for: silver or gold. Stick to one so that you can always mix and match. Rose gold and copper tend to go with either. BEWARE of buying cheap rings online- they're usually very flimsy/flexible and end up breaking after a few wears or just generally feel like cheap plastic (forever 21, Aliexpress and ASOS are guilty of this).

Imo ETSY is the best place to find unique rings online. There's a lot of shit to sift through though, so know your keywords and make sure the seller has good reviews. Almost every seller has their own version of a skull ring. Find the right skull for you!

RING SIZING GUIDE: https://ensorings.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/stringtest-min.png

SOME TERMS (I'm not getting into engagement/diamond rings here, that's a whole 'nother ballgame)

Bezel: a setting holding the stone in place using a raised surrounding for the stone with a lip encircling and overlapping the edges of the stone

Cameo: carved relief portrait traditionally carved from semi-precious stone or glass, traditionally with contrasting colors

Faceted: multiple angles of flat surfaces (could refer to gemstone or metal surface)

Signet: a small decorative seal, or simply a flat surface at the front (see also: sovereign ring and Seal of Solomon)

Oxidized Silver: true sterling silver, but it's surface has been intentionally darkened (patina) by introducing it to a sped-up version of the natural tarnishing process

Gold-plated: a thin layer of gold over another metal (usually silver or copper)

Enamel: Transparent, durable coating made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate via firing

Sterling Silver: an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals (usually copper)

Aqeeq: traditional Islamic-style ring with mounted quartz gemstone

Filigree: delicate, ornamental work, sometimes cut directly through the metal.

Purity Ring: Something you all should own, u virgins.

Finger Armour: "claw"-like contraption spanning entire finger, with movable joint(s)

Rose Gold: gold and copper alloy, creating a red/pink tint

Turquoise Jewelry: Popularized by Southwest Native Americans- a blue-green gemstone

Guard Ring: a tighter-fitting, secondary ring to prevent a looser ring from slipping off

Bar (or Split-bar) ring: style of straight, geometric bar across the top of ring, or two parallel bars

Memento mori: Latin for "Remember that you have to die". Artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality, i.e. skulls.

Rosary Ring: Christian design with cross and 10 indentations/protrusions) representing one decade of a rosary

Midi ring: Smaller ring worn on the joint above the knuckle

WHERE TO BUY (sorted by prices) My personal compilation- based on looks and cursory overview of reviews, not buying experience so can't guarantee any of these sellers are legit. If you have experience with any of these stores/ have any to add I can edit in your comments!
