[Discussion] The potential design inspiration and starting point behind Virgil Abloh’s Off-White.

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:07 PM PST

Hey fam I was looking into the typeface "New Rail Alphabet" a few days ago and I found these insane potential connections and inspiration points that I believe served as the starting inspiration of Virgil's brand Off-White.

Example One:

https://imgur.com/a/omsug

http://www.design-by-izo.com/2011/05/24/new-rail-alphabet/

Glasgow airport is shown as an example of the typeface in the article sporting an almost identical motif that Virgil uses frequently. That next thing that made me say 'oh shit' was the weights of the typeface (New Rail Alphabet) with the starting weight of "Off-White" (thinking emoji).

Example Two

https://imgur.com/VhB9ZDF Another image of Glasgow airport

In this image we can see the arrow motif again combined with a diagonal pattern. Virgil as well references this frequently. These two motifs found in the late 1960's identity of Glasgow Airport in my opinion are the main motif inspiration behind the back designs of Off-White.

This is tied together by the fact that Virgil uses Helvetica as the brands main font, a very similar typeface to New Rail that Virgil ultimately decided to use over New Rail after most likely researching both.

So either I'm fucking high and these a just all random coincidences, or Virgil was researching typefaces and discovered New Rail Alphabet and then went into deep rabbit hole sourcing parts that would later form the identity of Off-White.

If this is already common knowledge then shame me and ignore this post.

[discussion] What's your hairstyle?

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:17 AM PST

I'm interested in what /r/streetwear's hair looks like.

How do you choose your hairstyle? What products do you use in it? Do you have to fight it to get it to do what you want? What color is your hair and have you dyed it colors in the past? Has your hair changed along with your style?

For me, hair makes a pretty big difference in style and how people are perceived. When I show old pictures to people, they say 'Wow that doesn't even look like you' just because my hairstyle is completely different. It changes around every 10 months. Also, my hair is able to be styled multiple ways (because it's naturally curly), so even day to day it can appear fairly different. I've never dyed my hair, though I've thought about doing it a lot. Oddly enough, I think my hair changes much faster than my personal style.

what's the deal with this word limit smh

[Review] Acne Studios North Slim-Fit Stay Black

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 07:36 AM PST

Short review here, but I have to get this off my chest.

Background

Bought from Mr Porter around Christmas last year to replace some random Levi's I had.

Fit

Impeccable from the thighs on down. Perfect slimness through the calves, and great slim leg opening. They only come in 32" inseam (I got them hemmed to 30"), so probably not for all y'all real tall boys out there. I'm on the larger thigh/calf end (half genetics half powerlifting), but there's so much elastane on these it doesn't matter.

That said, these are super loose on the waist block. I bought 33", ended up exchanging for 32", and they're still slipping off my waist. The stretch clearly doesn't really help here either. I considered going down to 31", but by that point, it was too skinny for me in the calves. If you have small thighs/calves, consider sizing down 3"-4" off your true waist size.

These sit pretty low rise, not my real cup of tea for pants, but for black jeans, I think that's a better look overall.

Finish

And here's the killer — if the lint filter is broken on your dryer, you might as well just stuff these down there and call it a day. These jeans catch more lint than any of my other clothes combined. I've had to stop wearing scarves completely with these because within minutes it'll look like I'm rocking distressed grey denim.

It's quite the exercise in cognitive dissonance knowing that these are some of the blackest jeans on the market, but they'll never stay that way unless you happen to be wearing them shirtless in a Foxconn cleanroom.

Here's what they look like right now, after 2 lint rolls earlier in the day. I don't even wear these often for obvious reasons — maybe 5 wears max now?

Conclusion

These jeans fit well with some nitpicks, but I cannot get over this lint issue. Can't recommend them unless you're okay looking like you rolled in dog pen all morning, or happen to own a lint roller factory.

On a side note, if you're interested in buying these pair off me (maybe you can deal with the lint better than me?), DM me. I'll give you a ridiculous discount off MSRP. Also taking recs from people with experience on black denim that doesn't lint hard and runs slim.

[discussion] How SW went from 30$ dollar outfits to its current high price tag state.

Street fashion used to have at least four tiers. The highest tier was always the designer shoes and clothing. Rappers/Dboys always loved designer pieces all the way back to the old school gucci/prada shoes of the 80s or when 50 cent had the gucci gun strap. Then there was the slightly lower tier of Gino Green Global/ Christian Audiger/sean john etc. shirts with some evisu/bape/sean john/etc. jeans and a fresh pair of jordans/bapes with a BB simons belt(or something similar). Then the next tier was the Air Forces/reeboks/addidas/NB with a pair of Levis/Rocawear/ecko/enyce/fubu shirt/jeans/belt. There was even a lower tier of Tall Tees/wife beater from footlocker/local gas station, with a pair of footlocker brand sweat pants and some converses with a no name beanie or du rag and people would think you where fresh as hell. Now its all about Jordans, designer shoes, expensive Adidas, nikes, etc. Designer belts/rags/wallets/backpacks are a staple to every rapper/Dboys wardrobe. Designer clothing, Robins jeans, and other very expensive clothing is what is popular right now. Back in the day you would see the most famous rappers/dboys rocking all 4 tiers and some would even exclusively rock the cheapest gear. I know people still wear white Ts and Wife beaters. Cons and Vans are also popular. There are some mid priced gear that is also popular, but besides that I don't see much of the cheap gear getting worn. Am I wrong in my assessment and just since I am old/moved out of the hood I don't see the cheap gear anymore? The only cheap gear I really see is bootleg designer/Jordans. Has bootleg gear taken over the lowest tier? Any rappers that still wear the cheap gear(even when I watch the under ground Drill/Trap rappers who haven't even put out an album they all have the bootleg designer and some Js)? I always though street wear was very cool because even the poorest kids with a little bit of taste could look like the DBoys that ran their block growing up, but now it seems like it is not the case anymore. Feel free to add your comments to this I would love to discuss it.

[Discussion] Question: Has anyone heard of the brand "MISC"?

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:03 AM PST

I'm new here, but just wondering if anyone has any experience with this new brand called "MISC"? They don't have many products (only some hoodies and a long sleeve shirt), but it looks interesting. I was thinking of ordering a hoodie from them but I'm not sure if I can trust their quality. On the unofficialMISC Instagram, they said they print on Gildan hoodies. On their Etsy, they say, "Designs were digitally printed using plastisol ink and applied using a heat transfer press. The designs are wash resistant but it is advisable to avoid regular washing."

Any input?
