/r/Streetwear Major February Changes *REVISION*

As a follow-up to the previous thread here some changes have been made to the rules that will affect what you can and can't post. All revised changes are in bold.

We hope these will properly address some of the feedback we recieved on the original changes.

Without further ado:

/R/STREETWEAR CHANGELOG

Recurring threads:

  • WDYWT now set to contest mode
  • WDYWT posted 6x weekly every 28 hours
  • SQ/GD 3x weekly instead of daily (every 56 hours)
  • Pickup thread every sunday
  • W2C/ID thread killed
  • Sales thread killed
  • Pop Shop thread killed
  • SQ/GD default sort changed to new

WDYWT:

  • Karma requirement removed in favour of written application process

Posts:

  • All posts must be self posts with the exception of, INSPO and WDYWT submissions. Text posts now require a 150 word minimum. This is to help and prevent the mindless spamming of celebrity pics with no real intention behind them, and other low quality submissions. If you believe a picture is a good discussion point, we ask that you kickstart that discussion with some relevant information.
  • Text posts must be 150+ words
  • Direct image posts are not allowed for posts with the exception of INSPO, WDYWT, and ART threads
  • Direct link posts (ie. blogs, videos, articles) are allowed
  • All posts must contain the proper [FLAIR] tag in the title so automod can do its thang
  • 'I designed this x' posts are now explicitly disallowed. Too many of these posts are just a paper-thin front for advertising that the OP gets mad at us for removing. Post these threads on /r/streetwearstartup to get some good feedback. If you want to request an exception, please send a modmail.
  • All reviews must be self posts. This is so we get actual reviews, not just pictures.

My front page is literally just WDYWT. Like, twenty of them in a row. Outfits are cool but they get pretty boring, I came to this sub for discussion, streetwear news, and inspiration. I didn't start coming to see a small group of people (the whitelist) post what they wear each day. Sure, I like WDYWT posts, the outfits are cool and all, but they're boring as fuck when they're literally the only content on the sub. ESPECIALLY when the only people who can even post WDYWT are people on a list chosen by the admins. I mean, look at this. There's literally no unique content or discussion on my front page, just a bunch of fit pics. Also, the 150 word requirement seems to be causing all the self-posts to just tank and get like max 30 upvotes, because people have to artifically lengthen their post and make it more boring to fit the arbitrary word requirement, like I'm doing right now. Then, everyone who reads them thinks "this is boring and not concise at all," so they either don't actually read it or they don't upvote it. I get that having 150 words is supposed to make the posts more interesting and thought-through, but a lot of them are just people linking to articles or albums that already have their commentary, so putting 150 words into the post itself is pointless.

Anyway all I'm saying is can we just rename the sub to /r/fitpics or smth?

edit: to everyone who just wants to say that my blog is shitty, I already know it is lmao, and this isn't about my blog getting clicks because I legitimately don't give a shit about that, it's about what kind of content I enjoy seeing on the front page.

Teddy Fresh is the brainchild of Hila Klein from H3H3. The brand utilizes palewave and skittle colors in the form of unique color blocking to bring out a more playful approach to streetwear style.

The first drop was received pretty poorly on this sub deemed by most as too childish and coming off too strong with the clashing colors.

What do you guys think about this second drop?

In my opinion, I think Hila has definitely grasped a more approachable style with this second drop. The pieces, especially the Sherpa Jacket and the Windbreaker, are still loud but done more tastefully. The cohesion of the color blocking is much better with all the pieces. The cut of the Jacket and Windbreaker are pretty well done displaying a more unique design. I really like the colors of the hats, especially the brown, and the use of corduroy, but I don't really like the the large patch with the two piggies. The sweaters are the quiet pieces of this drop with very simple colors and designs, nothing special here.

Hila has been known to visit this sub every once in a while, so I think she would definitely appreciate criticism from you guys to help formulate and improve her brand.

I really liked the rugged look of the dyed lf1's but wanted some kind of gradient which gets darker towards the back and top. I used some (relatively) cheap Nike court borough lows and four varying concentrations of black dye. I removed the laces and used packaging tape to keep the sole white and nice. The shoes were soaked in each concentration for 10 minutes. Since I don't have a dryer, i let them dry on their own which took around 36 hours or so.

Unfortunately, if you take a closer look, you can see that I couldn't really achieve a fluent gradient. I guest it would work better on canvas shoes. However, when taking a step back I think it looks really nice and just how I imagined. What do you think? Should I dye the laces grey as well or do white laces fit?

Add Some Streetwear Flair to My (WIP) Wardrobe!

Hey guys, this is a collage I put together comprising of my current wardrobe pieces. I lean heavily toward Scandinavian Minimalism, and add some splashes of color here and there. I like my wardrobe as is, but I'm a huge fan of certain streetwear fits that incorporate more timeless garments like topcoats and button down shirts with pieces that are more oriented toward streetwear such as sweatpants/joggers. (Ex1, Ex2, Ex3, Ex4, Ex5.) Although not pictured in the example pics, I have a gaping hole in my wardrobe that is the lack of a streetwear sneaker and maybe even some combat-oriented boots. I can't live without a sneaker sharing the Y3 aesthetic. If not that, then whatever sneaker silhouettes the community think I should give a hard look.

TL;DR Recommend some streetwear or streetwear-inspired pieces (garments and footwear) that could be versatile enough to work with at least a good portion of my wardrobe. Go crazy!

[DISCUSSION] Wardrobe Resets: Comfortability and Versatility

I recently decided to reset my wardrobe. Not quite from square one but instead I have decided to pare down any extraneous pieces I think might be over the top, and to remove any pieces of clothing that are no longer "me" as I have evolved both in fashion and as a person. I was hoping then to pose some questions and offer some advice on the topic in general as i am currently in the midst of selling all my nice clothes and can't very well put together a fit in this interim.

As a few of you might know, I've been putting together outfits for a while that swing wildly between different styles and shapes. (example 1, example 2, example 3) but recently I've been finding that despite my outfits fitting all over the spectrum and working for all sorts of purposes, moods and looks I've just been wearing one single outfit more and more (this baby). It's not because i dislike my clothes or because im lazy, more so i believe it leads back to the versatility of my wardrobe as a whole. I've been at this game for years and years now and I've never really stopped myself and forced myself to examine exactly what my style is. As a result of this I can put together a few outfits in each style, but wheni try and mash two different corners of my closet together, i find the results incohesive unappealing. My first piece of advice then would be to step back every once and a while, or before bigger purchases and ask "where exactly does this fit in my wardrobe" and perhaps learn from my mistakes and have a more cohesive idea of how you want to look rather than jumping between styles.

I would also say a large part of my decision to reset my wardrobe comes down to my accumulation of pointless designer pieces. Pointless not in that they're ugly but just in that they never get worn. Designer puffer jackets that never get worn in my Georgia climate, yohji pants that I didn't even have a jacket to match with, julius sweaters that only went with a single pair of pants. I saw a shiny new piece and instead of asking myself how i would get the most use out of it, i grabbed it as soon as I saw one outfit I could put together that would look alright. But with intent. Just because an item looks beautiful to you, ask yourself "how will this look on my body, and with my clothes". If you find yourself, like I have, wearing levis, docs, and a comfy jacket instead of more creative clothing that you've already bought and is already in your wardrobe, it may be time to consider what value such pieces hold to you.

Finally I think its important just to be comfortable in the clothes you wear. I don't mean to say that people should cave to the bullies or headasses that call them out for their clothes, but i think that you should wear what you feel most natural in. For some people that may be tricky ricky avante garde and for some it might be golfme fleurs and a band tee. Both are valid if they make you happy. All of my wild flare sleeve goth boy hoodies looked beautiful, got me compliments, and felt nice on my body, but whe i saw myself in the clothes it just didnt seem like a natural extension of myself. I didn't feel like the life i lead of the person i was really matched up with the clothes on my body, a fact I am now trying to change.

I'll leave you with a few questions.

  1. Have you ever reset your wardrobe? If so, why and how did you change

  2. Do you plan on ever doing that? Why or why Not?

  3. What are some cool style changeups youve seen in the past from celebs, friends, internet personalities and so on?

  4. Should we impeach rikka and have a violent streetwear revolution killing all who stand in our way?

  5. What style do you think you'd like to see me in, in the future

Why does reddit hate designer belts and shoes?

Seemingly everyone who asks questions about designer belts or shoes is met with the "tacky" "gaudy" or "unprofessional" vibe. I genuinely don't see the issue wearing a LV monogram belt or a Gucci Supreme canvas belt if that's what the person likes and wants. It's their hard earned money. Not everyone who buys those objects are doing so to show off or get compliments. I also see a lot of people being attacked for "wasting" their money. Whereas "worth" and "wasting" are subjective terms that will vary from person to person. For instance, I don't like going clubbing, partying or drinking. That doesn't mean that people who do enjoy those things are wasting their money. Different strokes for different folk.

Can somebody explain in simple terms to a non american why Jordans are as huge as they are within sneaker/streetwear culture.

I'm from Ireland and nobody wears Jordans here. I live in the capital city Dublin and walk around everyday but would rarely see any Jordans other than maybe one pair of 1's on a good day. However on subs like this and pretty much every streetwear/sneakerhead site online the Jordans get a lot of wear and credit. This post was inspired by a post made by u/SP429 earlier about the best selling brands/shoes of 2017 and I was amazed to see so many Jordans on the list and how high the Jordan brand ranked.

I feel like the trend where I live is quite strongly against high top sneakers with most people opting for a low/mid silhouette so this could be a factor but I've been into sneakers for years and have never really known of Jordans to have any on foot presence over here so I don't know if this trend is to blame. Basketball isn't a popular sport here so that could be a large part of it also.

So is it simply because MJ was such a superstar? or that nostalgia sells well? or that basketball is so huge it drives sales? Is it because people honestly like the designs and silhouettes? Is it because they're deemed as collectible? If you own any J's feel free to drop some knowledge on why you bought them or explain the brand to me.

Vestoj: The Platform for Critical Thinking on Fashion

With so many websites and magazines covering fashion its can be hard to find original content that doesn't feel stale and regurgitated. Even new sneaker or collection announcements feel as though the writers are simply, going through the motions and not really conveying anything about the topic at hand. Considering the vast expanse of the fashion world its hard to believe that good clothing and couture journalism is hard to find. For that reason I feel as though Vestoj rises to the top as an online and physical publication that goes above and beyond.

Perhaps one of the most gripping pieces, in my eyes, was their seventh issue of the masculinities. Although the online version is just a forward to the full piece, one quote in particular stands out as phenomenal even more so than many full articles I have read.

In his Symposium Plato wrote that we were all hermaphrodites until the gods decided to split us in two. That men have feminine traits and women masculine ones has entered the mainstream by now, but even so, when it comes to our appearance we continue to favour convention. Curiously, even unorthodox displays of masculinity ultimately point to their deviation from the norm, and as such they reinforce the standard. Even the man in a skirt is always already not a man in a suit.

To anyone interested in finding some new reading on fashion I would highly suggest going through the online catalog. Hope some people enjoy this recommendation!

Playstation and Nike are dropping another Air Force 1 Collab

Nike and Playstation have reignited their partnership this year with a release of the Playstation x Nike PG 2. However, that will not be the only Playstation Nike that will release this year. It appears as though a new 2018 Playstation x Nike Air Force One will release as well.

The first Playstation x Nike Air Force 1 released in 2006. Initially, there were rumors that the original Playstation x Nike Air Force 1 would retro in 2016 for the 10th anniversary. However, nothing would materialize. Also, this Playstation x Nike Air Force 1 will not be the same as the OG.

There are only mockups thus far, but according to @py_rates, the shoe utilizes a Black and Cobalt Blaze upper. On the Black overlays are graphics of the shape buttons of the PlayStation controller. The four swoosh on the medial also match the colors of the aforementioned shapes.

[META] Art on r/Streetwear.

I just want to know what everyone thinks about 'good/higher-quality' art on this sub. Some users and content creators, can and have posted interesting art on this sub-reddit, before the new February rules came into play for months or maybe years and some were really good. Personally from attempting to post an art piece and realising these changes today. I feel like creative content is almost discouraged.

DISCLAIMER: I am not bashing the rules or the moderators - I completely sympathise with the size of this sub and how difficult it must be to moderate.

All posts must be self-posts with a minimum 150 word body in order to promote discussion, with the exception of WDYWT posts and Inspo Albums.

I totally understand the above and I agree. It encourages quality content and makes it tough for people to 'shit post' and post low-quality garbage. However what about art? If illustrative pieces and other art that is well executed (well executed being a crucial element here) has been posted before on this sub-reddit and been very well received for months as link posts, why are they now forced into text/self posts? Should there not be some exception to allow art posts as link posts as well as WYDWT and inspo albums. It's far more convenient and I personally can't see how having art posts forced into self/texts posts is a good idea. If the art is shit it gets deleted under rule 2. Which it should imo and having art posted under text posts means it could encourage almost a paragraph (150 words) of rambling by OP (which isn't quality) just to keep the post up and within rules of the sub-reddit. Maybe a whitelist system for content creators deemed to post consistently good art to the sub-reddit should be made a thing and could solve this problem?

If art is allowed as a link post - the user should still be required to give an a quality breakdown as a comment on the link thread within a small timeframe i.e 2 minutes - to encourage quality art only and not M-S paint garbage. If f the user fails to comply - the auto moderator deletes the thread. That makes sense to me. However having art being strictly text post based doesn't make any sense to me. What do you think? Is this a change you're happy with? This is mean't to be a discussion. I want to know what you think. Thank you.

Billionaire Boys Club release their version of "the Year of the Dog"

It has recently been announced that Billionaire Boys club is to release a year of the dog capsule to celebrate the start of the Chinese new year on the 16th February. The streetwear brand, established by Pharell Williams and Nigo back in 2005, has used the brands jumping dog motif to represent the year of the dog theme. The capsule includes hoodies and t-shirts in black, white and grey and will be released this Friday online, and at billionaire boys club retailers.

A lot of brands have now jumped onto the Chinese year of the dog hype. Although quite an appealing capsule, I'm not sure whether it is unique as some of the other brands that have released year of the dog capsules (Gucci, Bottega Veneta.) Love to hear your thoughts!

The Full Air Max Day 2018 Collection Has Been Unveiled Including a New Wang Junkai x Air Max Zero

Air Max Day is a big day for sneakerheads. Mar. 26 was the day that the Tinker Hatfield creation: the Air Max 1, released to the public. Since then, 30 years of Air Max shoes have released. But, Air Max Day wasn't a celebrated day for sneaker lovers everywhere until 2014. Heading into its fourth year, Air Max Day 2018 is looking to be a big year, and now we know to expect to release leading up to that day.

At a special preview event in Shanghai, Nike showed off the upcoming Air Maxes. Many of the releases were shoes that we knew about. The atmos x Air Max 1 and 95 will be making their return. Last year's "Vote Forward" challenge winner Sean Wotherspoon's Air Max 97/1 was also shown off. Also, classics like the Air Max 93 and Air Max 180 (OG and CDG) made their appearance, although they have already released. However, an unknown pair of Air Max Zeros was also there. Chinese Singer Wang Junkai collaborated with Nike's Air Max line last year. But, this is the first time we're actually seeing the results.
