[Discussion] My Guide to thrifting/secondhand clothes in NYC!

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:41 PM PDT

NYC in my opinion is the best city in the US to thrift in. The high concentration of very wealthy and fashionable people means that the chances of finding something incredible are much higher than in your average city. Ive found a shit ton of good stuff, both for myself and for resell. Ive probably made about $10,000 off of stuff that I have resold this year.

Here are some general tips.

  • Go early, but not too early Don't go right when the store opens, because usually they haven't put the new stuff out yet. I generally go about an hour after opening time just to be safe.

  • Know where the put new items Most shops have a method for how the put new items on the rack, figure it out and your life will be a lot easier.

  • If you don't see anything you like leave Best advice you'll get honestly. Its never a good idea to buy something just to buy it, you'll save money and time by leaving without getting anything. I probably get something 20% of the time i got into a shop.

  • Go frequently Its better to go once a day for 5 min than to go once a week and stay for half an hour.

  • Avoid the weekend Its generally more crowded, more picked over and the trains are worse.

Heres a guide to my top 5 Shops.

Shop Adress Guide Tips Types of things you will find there
Beacons Closet Manhattan 10 W 13th St Honestly the best shop in the city in my opinion. Really good selection of both hyped stuff and high fashion. A bit on the pricier side as far as thrift shops go, but the prices are cheap enough that I still consider it a thrift store not a consignment shop. I can almost always find something worth keeping or reselling every day I come here. On weekdays try to get in before 3-4pm because It tends to get pretty crowded. Pants are hard to find here, because mens+woman's pants are not separated. Focus on tees, sweatshirts and shoes. They have it all. I've found great Supreme here, archive CDG, Rick Ramones, and a bunch of good tees.
L Train Vintage Manhattan 204 1st Avenue Great semi-curated vintage shop. Most shirts around $5-10. Store is jammed full clothes, so make sure to check upstairs + downstairs. Pretty Self explanatory shop, again try shopping early on weekdays, because it'll be crowded on weekend and afternoons. Make sure to look downstairs at the windbreaker/jackets section. Also have a great selection of jeans, and you can probably pick of a pair of vintage Levi's in your size for $10-15 I've found good vintage Polo and some nice vintage nike gear. If you're luck you can probably find some vintage air maxes.
Tokio 7 83 E 7th St This is basically Grailed if it had a real store. They do their research and price things at what they're really worth. Generally a great selection of really nice things, but not cheap. They have a good selection of Japanese brands and have a pretty good selection of hyped stuff as well. This is basically like buying from a reseller without worrying about getting scammed and fakes. Never too crowded. Make sure to check the front of the store first, because thats where the newest items are. Big selection of Old + New Bape. Ive gotten Visvim, undercover and Raf from here.
Housing Works Upper East Side 1222 2nd Ave This shop is filled with rich white people shit. Housing works can be kinda pricy, but sometimes they have good steals. Occasionally they have trendier stuff too. Check the jeans and polo racks, they've the places Ive found the best stuff. Also a goodwill on 61st and 1st so you might want to check that out. Armani, Allen Edmonds, Prada, Gucci.
Beacons Closet Williamsburg 74 Guernsey St This is the big brother of the beacons closet in Manhattan. It's a lot bigger, and slightly less expensive, but also has slightly less good stuff. Again try to get in here early before it gets too picked over. They also tend to have a really good selection of brand new items from new York brands, and skate brands. Check out the tees, jackets and shoes, and you'll probably find something worth getting. Bianca Chandon, AMI, Awoke NY, Kith.

Message me or comment if you have any questions. This is something I've spent a bunch of time doing, so id love to help!

[DISCUSSION] What other brands make hoodies sourced from the same Canadian manufacturer that makes 3Sixteen, Reigning Champ, and Supreme hoodies?

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:57 PM PDT

Looking for other alternatives. 3sixteen hoodies are too much IMO and my last 3sixteen hoodie died a few years back. I dont mind supreme as a brand but dont really want to drop that much on a hoodie seeing as my toddler can damage it at any moment. Reigning Champ has some good ones but just wanted to see what other brands were using the same manufacturer.

thanks

[DISCUSSION] Street/Hype Stores To Visit In Barcelona?

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:21 AM PDT

Hi guys.

I am visiting Barcelona in a few weeks and was wondering are there any cool streetwear stores or hype shops to visit? I searched around but a few of the posts seem a bit old. Was just wondering if there were any cool places I should check out! I am looking for any shops that sell things from sort of stussy upwards, just anything you wouldn't really find in your average clothes shop. I have read about 'sivasdescalzo' AKA SVD, and was wondering if that still exists as that looked like a really smart place! Also does anyone know if the store 'laclikabarcelona' is still around? Found this one also looks pretty close to what I'm looking for also but the last time they posted was in 2016. Just tricky to judge if these places still even exist anymore! Please drop below any cool places you know of, or if any of these places are still going!

Cheers

We love our sneakers, but fortunately, we know of a few labels that haven't overlooked the need for top-tier sandals when the mercury starts to rise.

Kicking off your… well, kicks has never been easier. Score your pair of high-fashion sandals, flip-flops or slides in our latest giveaway:

I'm an artist and I'm just trying to find a home for my work. I would be interested in knowing whether I could work with someone on a fashion related project or if I should offer some kind of print on demand t-shirt products. Your thoughts? This is simply my artwork. I may not have enough perspective on trends within the street fashion realm.

The first piece uses what may be an overused trope: flowers. The other uses a xerox technique incorporating text written in paint. In general I've envisioned these works as posters but it dawned on me that it could work with fashion.

Here is some similar but different work : https://www.behance.net/gallery/62745517/Detritus

Wondering if anyone can help me with some socks to spice up a fit!
Been trying for a while to find socks that aren't your typical 'Happy Socks" which have bananas or lightning bolts etc on them.

Okay so here I go not being a lurker and posting. Oh geez, I'm on the other side of the screen. Anyway I made something let me know what you think about it. Should I make more of this type of art? I want to paint everything way cooler shit than jackets, but this is something so here.

Is this actually discussion? Google says "the action or process of talking about something, typically in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas. " But I'm willing to maybe do custom jackets if someone wants.

[DISCUSSION] I need a major makeover. I'm a 30/M who dresses like a 40+ dad/professor. It's starting to effect my self esteem, and probably negatively effects other areas of my life. How can I fix this?

Posted: 28 Jul 2018 06:06 PM PDT

*I Posted this on MFA too. I figured I'd post it here to get another subreddit's unique perspective. I hope this is allowed.

I felt this way for a while but never really took the initiative to get any advice about it. My work requires me to need to wear collared shirts and that has pretty much overtaken my wardrobe. But for the longest time I felt like I come across as a dork/geek, and that I dress like some middle aged dad/professor.

I have heard on more than 1 occasion people referencing that I'm "Bill Gates".

The type of clothes I always like when I see others wear them is "street wear" I guess. I'm not really interested in looking "smart professional" or whatever it is called. I prefer more urban style if that makes sense. However, I am open to everything.

For example, I actually like the deadmau5, graphic t-shirt/jeans skater look even though it's probably frowned upon here. (MFA)

I exclusively always wear jeans, and prefer wearing t-shirts when I am able, but for the work week just wear the collared shirts. However, even when I put on a normal t-shirt, I still don't feel like I look "cool" for lack of a better term. I see people while commuting to work, or when watching youtube videos of celebs who wear just simple jeans and a t-shirt and they always look "cooler"and more put together. I can't explain it.

In the fall, I , I like to wear long sleeve flannel shirts.

I have a few pairs of the same type of jeans, Levi 559. I have tree trunk legs, with huge fat calves. These are the only pair I know of that I feel like I have enough room. A lot of other jeans I try on, are a struggle to put on or take off because they get stuck at my calves area.

For shoes I wear charcoal/grey Vans Slip Ons.

Like I said above, no matter what I wear though I feel like I still look like a nerd/dork/geek/dad/professor.

I also feel like a lot of it has to do with the glasses that I wear and my hair. I almost never style my hair. When I get haircut and have it short, It's easier to style because I can just lift the front up a little and it looks much better, but once it gets to the length I have in my pictures, I don't know what to do with it. These pictures were taken today, and it's been about 5 weeks since my last haircut.

I feel like my glasses are outdated looking and I should either ditch them for contacts and/or get a more modern looking pair that fits my face better.

It's all starting to negatively affect my self esteem. I never get any attention from women and I feel my style heavily contributes to that. When I am in a group of guys, always feel inferior and like I look the worst. Even when I look at pictures of myself in groups with other guys, I don't feel I fit in

My pictures are at the link below. I included everything I normally wear during the week, and a couple of the long sleeves I wear during Fall/Winter. I also included a couple t-shirts that I wear over the weekend, or whenever I am able.

I apologize in advance as the camera on my phone is not the greatest.

I'm hoping I can finally find out the truth and get the advice and help that can put me in the right direction.

I think it's at the point where I wouldn't be against maybe hiring some university fashion student to go clothes shopping with me. It's something I've considered.

[DISCUSSION] I've got a few questions about custom sneakers!

Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:51 AM PDT

So, im sitting home debating if custom shoes that are painted a colorway that already exists is fake or not..

I'm just so curious ff the customizer makes a custom jordan 1 bred for example, are they considered fakes? or customs?

Because its trying to be a colorway its not meant to be?

I'm unsure, i've seen alot of customizers on youtube making custom OG colorways of a shoe. It looks very tempting to do.

Lets just say for example: I want to make a pair of Air Jordan 1 Mids into a pair of Air Jordan high og bred 1s, would it be considered a fake because a bred mid doesn't exist? or would it just be considered a custom.

Or can it only be called a custom if you add something extra to it?

Please im curious!

[DISCUSSION] questions about ASOS returns and returns in general

Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:08 PM PDT

I recently ordered the adidas continental 80 off ASOS in a US 8, but since ASOS is a UK company they sent me a UK 6.5 which should've converted to my size. Instead, I got a full size below what I expected, and it barely fits. I talked to them and basically all I can do is mail in return the shoes, but that will not only take a long time, but I'll actually lose money since I'll get $60 back since they were on sale when I bought them. They're normally $80. So I'm pretty stuck on what to do, theyre pretty uncomfortable to wear but idk if it's worth losing money and waiting more than three weeks to get my actual size. Any recommendations on what I can do? At this point I've been thinking about going to urban or an adidas store and just saying I lost my receipt and paid with cash so I can just exchange the shoes.

edit: I should also clarify that I intend to buy the shoes again, but there's no way to exchange them at asos
