RULE CHANGE AND SURVEY RESULT ANNOUNCEMENT

Posted: 20 Jan 2019 02:24 AM PST

Hello Everyone!

Mod team here, with some updates on u/CJ_Leaf's survey results and rule changes we are implementing in response to the results.

Here's an album of all the questionnaire results.

Reasoning for the changes

In light of the recent discontent, we have reached the conclusion that our views regarding how the sub needs to be run have been somewhat myopic since it was based solely on our past experiences. We failed to account that times change, reddit has changed, and the demographic of this subreddit has changed. Because of this, we have spent a lot of time discussing how we should move forward with the subreddit.

New Mods!

First, I'd like to welcome some new members to our mod team, u/bbbunny___ and u/eqqy. As a disclaimer, we did not solicit the whitelisters in order to recruit a new moderator, but rather, only reached out to specific candidates who we thought were contributing, non-antagonizing users fit for the job. We are still actively recruiting mods, specifically within the active userbase outside of the whitelist over the next few months, and will reach out to those who we feel are good fits.

Rule Change Reasoning

While only 19% of the subreddit thought that the subreddit was bad, over 45% thought the subreddit was merely decent/mediocre. Over 45% of the users also wanted us to listen to the userbase more in making our changes. While we don't believe that the majority of the subreddit is hugely discontent with the subreddit, and while factoring in response bias to the survey, I think we can all be in agreement that there's no hurt in giving the user's requests a shot.

Please note that the changes you are about to see are not permanent by any means. We are merely testing out the userbase's suggestions for a month to see if they actually work or not. Hopefully, we can use what works, discard what doesn't, to create a better subreddit in the future.

Rule Changes!

  1. WDYWT Changes: The majority of users were against the whitelist system, and were discontent with being gatekept from posting their fits on the front page. Because of this, we are indefinitely suspending the whitelist until further notice, and opening up WDYWT posts for all users on the front page. The catch is that the photo's need to be of a certain quality standard. Specifically, the entire outfit must be visible and clear. Mirror fit pics are allowed, but must adhere to the above condition. The WDYWT megathread will be removed as it is now redundant.
  2. Memes are back: Memes are back! Moderation will be light on these, mainly targeting reposts or off-topic/irrelevant memes. Post memes with your own discretion since it easily buries other content.
  3. Recurring Megathreads suck...: However, we will keep the SQ/GD megathread. We have lowered the text post requirements to 50 characters (not words, characters). The SQ/GD megathread should be used for off-topic talk as well as extremely simple questions such as W2C's, ID's, and "thoughts?" type posts.
  4. Inspo requirements are looser: Inspo can now include single images of celebrities/fashion icons in addition to the full albums we required before. Pictures of singular garments or sneakers, etc, will still be removed however.
  5. Reviews: Reviews will remain largely unchanged, but we are lowering the requirements a bit. Reviews should only be of grails, accessible garments that many are curious about, or comprehensive themed hauls (such as larger thrift hauls, band merch collection, boot collection, etc). Now they only need to be accompanied with a 50 character minimum of either a description or review of the content.
  6. What stays the same? Our old rule 3, don't be an asshole, will obviously still be enforced. Our no advertising without pre-approval guideline will be heavily enforced as well. With greater freedom comes greater responsibility for what you post, and we expect people to uphold the rules and guidelines when they are this lax. Any smaller niche guidlines/rules not mentioned in this post should be assumed to be the same; however, if you have any questions about the rules, shoot us a modmail.

Conclusion

Thank you guys for all the responses on the survey (598! Not too shabby), and those of you who gave actual legitimate feedback and discussion on how to improve the sub. The rule changes go into effect immediately. If we missed anything in terms of updating the sidebar, wiki, or automod, please let us know through r/streetwearmeta or the modmail. We reiterate that this is merely a trial run for us to gauge what works and what doesn't. I think it benefits us all to see how these changes will actually play out. In the meantime, feel free to give us feedback on these changes through this post, or again, r/streetwear meta or the modmail.

Happy clout chasing!

[Discussion] Unnecessary over moderation and gatekeeping killed this sub.

Posted: 19 Jan 2019 06:06 AM PST

It's just not fun to post here anymore. It's like walking across a fucking minefield. Hey mods, you might want to reconsider your filters when your users need to repost the same post at least three times for it to show up. So many unnecessary automod filters you need to consider. It's fucking ridiculous.

[DISCUSSION] What does your ideal streetwear app look like?

Posted: 19 Jan 2019 11:25 PM PST

Hey all! My friend and I are creating an app for the streetwear/sneaker/pop culture scene and I wanted to get the community's thoughts on what the ideal app looks like.

There are lots of platforms that do some things (Grailed and GOAT for resale, Frenzy and Confirmed for drops, Twitter and Instagram for live news, sites like Complex for general stuff, etc), but we're interested in making an app to be everyone's go-to. Looking forward to hearing everyone's ideas/stuff they hate about current platforms!

[DISCUSSION] Trying to wear more unique and different stuff, feel like my parents 'restrict' me.

Posted: 19 Jan 2019 01:40 PM PST

TL;DR: trying to make the 'transition' to streetwear, yet feel restricted by my parents

Hey:0

I pretty recently started getting interested in fashion, and more specifically, streetwear, as a way of expressing myself and differentiating myself with everyone else. As you might have guessed from the title, I'm in highschool, I'm obviously not financially independent and I kinda feel like my parents restrict me (not in a physical way) from expressing myself as I would loved to. Until around one year ago, my mother would picked up almost all of the clothes I had back then and I didn't really care. These days, the situation is a bit better as I usually go shopping with her and get to pick the clothing myself, although she still buys me stuff she sees on sale from popular brands like American Eagle, trying to convince me that these look great etc etc. The things is that I don't want to offend her claiming that I don't like the stuff she buys me or sound super ungrateful, yet I want to wear more interesting and unique pieces. Anyone else here has been through the same situation?

Thanks!
