How to buy anything from Japan (at the Japan price!) [X-Post from /r/rawdenim]

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 09:59 PM PST

So we all know the usual suspects in terms of getting some of our favorite Japanese denim brands and other quality clothing from Japan at good prices (Denimio, Okayama Denim, some Rakuten shops, etc.), but what if those stores don't carry the cool Japanese brand that you want at a good price (Kapital, Visvim, Beams, etc.etc.), are out of stock of a product or you've seen something in an auction site that you really want but the seller doesn't ship abroad. Well, with a:

  • (1) Japanese address to ship to (see below),
  • (2) the right payment method (see below), and
  • (3) a sprinkle of Google translate magic

you will be able to buy stuff as if you were in Japan — which opens up a whole world of awesome products that brands don't want to sell abroad at the Japanese price. I've been buying a lot of things (mainly denim and footwear) from Japan directly using this method (which was a result of trial and, unfortunately, some error). This method works for me though and has saved me some hard-earned $, so I wanted to share it with the community.

Shipping

Delivery Japan (http://www.delivery-japan.com/en/index.html) is my favorite. In my experience, their fee is the lowest when you combine orders. They also have a discount for regular use. You can buy as much as you want (for those eBay resellers out there!) and get it shipped there. You have to use their Transfer service and not their shopping service as that one charges additional fees.

Here are the steps:

  • 1) Fill out an application form on Delivery Japan and inform them what you will be sending them. Make sure to tell them you are ordering more than just one if you want to combine orders. They won't charge any storage fee up-to 30 days.

  • 2) Place orders on the internet and have them shipped to Delivery Japan's address (it's right there on the Transfer service page). Once all orders arrive in the warehouse, Delivery Japan will send you an email with the payment amount.

  • 3) Pay via credit card (4% additional) or via bank transfer.

  • 4) Done! Delivery Japan will combine everything and make a single shipment for you.

IMPORTANT: If you live in a country with high customs duties for imports (like I do), you can simply specify the price of the items as lower in the "Order" information section of the application form. You can basically set the price at whatever you want it to be to avoid or minimize duties. Delivery Japan will tell you that it's your responsibility since you are the importer, but I think it's worth the risk because at most for shoppers the customs authorities will just charge you the duties or a small fine or you can reject the package and lose the shipping cost. From more than a dozen packages I have shipped, I've only been asked to pay duties once, so it works out well. Pro Tip: don't combine too many items because your package will draw more attention from customs.

Shipping Method

I normally select SAL or AIR rather than express services such as FedEx or EMS. They take a few days to a few weeks longer than express services but the saving is huge. I live in South America and shipping bit by bit would add up in shipping costs (I was buying several times every few months). But after combining into a single delivery and using SAL, my shipping costs dropped to a small fraction of that.

Payment

Nowadays many companies in Japan accept credit cards but there are still some places that refuse cards issued abroad such as auctions or charge some extra.

If they don't take credit card, you'll have to see if they take bank transfer (some auctions and brands will allow that). Transferwise.com is the best for this purpose. It costs only a few dollars for a transfer and the recipient doesn't need to pay any fees on their end. The money comes in the recipient's account as domestic bank transfer within Japan, so they won't even know you are outside of Japan when ordering (plus forget about foreign wire transfers that cost you over 20-30USD + FX fees (2-4% of the amount) + 20-30USD on the recipient side as well!).

I don't need to teach you how to use Google translate, so that's it. Hope it helps!

I have this really cool vintage field coat thats waterproof and from alpha industries so the quality is outstanding. I got it from my dad who used to be in the military. I'm in love with it but the problem is I'm afraid I'll look like I'm the type of white kid to have 2 mac-10s strapped on the inside of the coat. I'll show pictures of me wearing it if someone asks but it looks almost identical to this just a lot more worn. I've already been made fun of before for wearing things people think are whack so I just think my confidence is low but I need a check from someone on the outside.
