[DISCUSSION] THATCOMMANDERSHEPARD'S STYLE AND TREND SUPER POST: Everything you need to break down and learn about modern internet fashion style tribes

Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:13 AM PDT

PREFACE

My goal for this post is to lay out a series of brand or style specific looks and trends I see on a regular basis on reddit, instagram, discords, in fashion shows, and in real life. Some of my trends may be more obvious than others, and my information is not always guaranteed to be accurate but I hope commenters will give me ideas for new trends to expand on and places I have messed up to keep this a living, breathing list. Big shout out to the the people in EHF and Whitelist Discord who helped me compile this list and categorize it. (PSA: all users who feel mis-categorized, want to help me correct the category I have put them in, or do not wish to be placed on the list at all please DM me and I will sort it out ASAP.)

  • THE "YALL SLEEPIN ON TYLER THE CREATOR:

Favorite Brands: Golf, Supreme, Dickies, Vans, Converse, Dirty event tee shirts from goodwill

Description: One of the more common species of fashion kiddie both on reddit and in real life, the "yall sleepin on tyler the creator" is more than likely the most well adjusted of the bunch. He is probably a highschooler working a retail job who has a active and normal social life and doesn't want to change his lifestyle to invest too much in clothes. For him, fashion is not so much an art as it is a way to express yourself more subtly and exude a general sense of fun and "coolness". Often tricked out in lots of colors, some slim straight cropped or cuffed pants, and a beanie, this dresser thrives off graphic tees to add complexity to their outfit.

Mood Musicians: Tyler The Creator, Brockhampton, Billie Eillish, A$AP Rocky, Kanye

Examples: /u/imdeluxx or noahlikesclothes, LeaveKane, golf lookbooks, Jonah Hill

  • THE TECHNINJA

Favorite Brands: Acronym, Nike ACG (but only the Errolson collections), Arc'teryx, Stone Island Shadow Project

Description: The Techninja is a breed found only in the rain slicked streets of Tokyo and Hong Kong.... or in a flyover suburb in Montana but they try their best. The techninja will tell you he is influenced by the pure functionality of the garments, but we all know he watches a little anime. Murdered out in black, olive, and the occasional pop of neon, the techninja has enough pockets to store a months worth of rations in the coming skynet apocalypse we all know is coming. From their tapered cargoes tucked gracefully in to the latest ACG nikes (or the occasional milsurp boot) the techninja is ready for anything.

Mood Musicians: Autechre, 2 8 1 4, GitS Original Soundtrack, Com Truise, Anime OP's (but only for moe slice of life series)

Examples: Jennifer Bin, Jah Eel, Alyxbot, Daddy Dave

  • TRICKY RICK

Favorite brands: Rick Owens, DRKSHDW, Hunrickowens, Parts of Four, Chrome Hearts

Description: One of the most prominent brand loyalists in the fashion community today, who can blame the Tricky Rick given how creative and diverse Rick Owen's designs are across his many accomplished seasons. Often murdered out in all black, this species has rare "shiny types" who actually take advantage of Rick's shockingly diverse palette of colors. Unstable tees, druid hoodies, and rick dunks characterize some breeds of rick heads, while others still choose rave pants, hiking boots and emotionless sweaters. Too varied to fully name, but always obviously from the mind of the titular designer, the Tricky Rick sports and iconic fashion forum look especially for the r/malefashion crowd.

Mood Musicians: Zebra Katz

Examples: Hyperion, Jacob Bagwell, KamakaziSexPilot, DotM

  • GOTH ARTISAN

Favorite Brands: Yohji, Guidi, Julius_7, Ann D, CCP, Something else but you probably haven't heard of it

Description: Expensive, otherworldly, ornate; the Goth Artisan takes home the senior superlative for "most likely for someone on streetwear to call you a school shooter". Often the evolved form of the Techninja or the Tricky Rick, this species uses its experience and his penchant for imaginative, fantastical outfit compositions to create something a bit more refined and classy. Moving away from the streetwear stying, the Goth Artisan lives in a pair of expensive black leather boots (unless you're on that HokaOne One wave). Less prone to "shiny" colored variants than the Tricky Rick, this breed loves the comforting warm embrace of black. One Goth Artisan has been quoted as "wanting to be Yohji but is painfully not. King of the cloak, sultan of the scarf, and always the moodiest guy in the room, the Goth Artisan always turns heads.

Mood Musicians: Chelsea Wolfe, Have A Nice Life, JASSS, Kero Kero Bonito

Examples:CloudRhythm, JdotKdot, Krist_Offer, SomethingsNothings, Neon Cool

  • JAPANESE STREETWEAR

Favorite Brands: Undercover, Cav Empt, Bape, WTAPS, Needles (Nepenthes), Visvim (but mostly the shoes), Wacko Maria

Description: For the discerning streetwear enthusiast, the Japanese Streetwear fan manages to wear cooler logos than you, though we aren't quite sure how. While his heart resides in Harajuku, his legs probably reside in Toronto, but nothing will stop this enthusiast from copping the coolest undercover tee shirt off Rakuten. An early adopter of the wide pants wave, the Japanese Streetwear enthusiast can be found rocking the best WTAPS cargoes, the freshest Nike collabs or Visvim christos, and the comfiest Cav Empt sweaters on the block. Boiling with, color, fun, and attitude, and with a more discerning eye than your average streetwear consumer; these users dress to please casual streetwear fans, and the fashion head alike.

Mood Musicians: Cornelius, Former Employees, Kids See Ghosts (and and Murakami era kanye album), Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

Examples: Thisistheodore, THE VISION: MIKE FUCKING SUNDAY, Sdnyjns, Sotoritetsu (Special shout out to /u/legendofmathys! Go follow his instagram!)

  • THE NU-SLP

Favorite Brands: Hedi-era SLP, Haider Ackerman, AllSaints, Margiela, From The First, Story et Fall, anything but Celine

Description: Currently the most depressed species on this list following Hedi Slimane's nuclear dive bomb at Celine, the Nu-slp is a breed that seeks meaning in a post-Hedi landscape while attempting to maintain the skinny boy lifestyle. Often decked out in the classic moto jacket, blood vessel annihilating denim, and black or tobacco wyatts, the Nu-slp also seeks to diversify their stylistic bonds. Often casually seen in a pair or margiela GATs on their off days, or in a silky allsaints button up in the summer, lazy luxury reigns supreme. In the same fashion, the more daring nu-slp will be found in looser haider ackerman trousers to pair with their slim wyatts, along with a set of rings and necklaces to complete the look. Always appreciated, but often underestimated, the Nu-slp maintains a surprising diversity in their classically appealing style.

Mood Musicians: Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Foxygen, Iggy Pop

Examples: /u/KonnieTheBlack, /u/Armordildo, /u/dom_kennedy, /u/AnyekayEstway (special shout out to Sangiev)

  • WEST COAST HYPEBEAST

Favorite Brands: Fear of God, MNML denim, Off White, Ksubi, N.D.G studio, Yeey, Jordan Brand

Description: An oft derided, but fiercely loyal sub group of the streetwear label, the West Coast Hypebeast probably takes more shit in 2018 than anyone else on fashion forums. Regardless of massive popularity this style once had, as it has diffused in to the mainstream, loyal hypebeasts continue to wear elevated versions of the more poorly executed alternatives you see on the street. The West Coaster can be found rocking skinny jeans more consistently than even the Nu-slp (though oft substituted for a pair of side striped zespy joggers), and is always walking to your local foot locker in the newest yeezy 350s or a pair of off-white nikes. Often a crossover style with the ever present cultural hobbyist "the sneakerhead", the west coast hypebeast often has a sneaker collection far more impressive than any other style, as they are often fit centerpieces to be paired with a simple hoodie, a layering tee, and a pair of shredded denim. Crisp, clean, traditionally cool in every sense, this breed makes up what it lacks in creativity with its effortlessly sleek feel.

Mood Musicians: 2Pac, Metallica if you arent a poser, Drake, Kendrick, Migos

Examples: Datzcoo, Simple.Fits, /u/benjammin341, Fear of God Sixth Collection Lookbook

  • JAPANESE AMERICANA

Favorite Brands: Kapital, Visvim, Hender Scheme, A Kind of Guise, Junya MAN, Yuketen, Needles

Description: The wacky big brother of the classic MFA raw denim bro, the Japanese Americana is probably one of the most self contradictory styles. Fresh from the streets of Harajuku, this breed will be decked out in Japanese brands with American names, trying as hard as possible to spin off early 20th century Americana style. Regardless of this confusing dichotomy, the uniquely Japanese take on heritage-wear allows for leagues more creativity in styling than your average denim bro. Want old school work boots with huge 70's smiley faces on the heel? Kapital has you covered. Want jordan 4s constructed out of the finest veggie tanned leather? Check out Hender Scheme. The Japanese Americana enthusiast effortlessly blends reserved work wear, psyched out 60's and 70's stylings, and even hints of streetwear and casual sweats in to a surprisingly cohesive and understandable style. Perhaps one of the most quality oriented species out there, the Japanese Americana man will be rocking his clothes long after all others have fallen to bits.

Mood Musicians: Bob Dylan, Animal Collective, Johnny Cash, John Prine, Pretty much any cozy folk music

Examples: The Union Made Website, KamoteJoe/Pocketman, Namjoon's Closet, John Mayer

  • EUROPEAN HYPEBEAST

Favorite Brands: Supreme, Palace, Kappa, Fila, Stone Island, Gosha, Nike, Places + Faces, Any brand that makes trackies

Description: THE MOST ABSOLUTELY GULLY BRAND OF HYPEBEAST, the European Hypebeast doesn't necessarily have to be from europe, but it sometimes is a bigger part of the culture than one would expect. A pair of Nike TN's and a fresh track suit either mean you're a degenerate wasteman who's going to ask me to bum a ciggie, or youre a modern hyper-fashionable teen from London who wants to take my photo on his new film camera.... maybe both. Regardless the Eurpoean Hypebeast is one of the most ostentatious of all fashion tribes. A god of logo mania, and always decked out in the boldest colors on the block, the Euro dresser completes his look with a logo branded sling bag and a new pair of vintage chunky runners be it air max '97s, fila disruptors, the new air monarch mk2s or anything in between. Be bold, be wild, be gully (or at least be a really good poser), and always match your pants with your top.

Mood Musicians: Skepta, Wiley, The Chemical Brothers, the dulcet tones of a pair of Nike TN's hitting the pavement

Examples:Gully Guy Leo, Jacko Blythe

  • INSTA CLOUT

Favorite Brands: Balenciaga, Vetements, MSBHV, JW Anderson, Acne, Ader Error, Alyx Studios, OAMC

Description: The more reserved child of the European Hypebeast and the Goth, the Insta Clout god takes said species' penchant for bold and grunge influenced looks in a more reserved direction. Colorful trackies are often replaced by black and tan dress pants, and their oversized sweaters are now more often than not paired with a nonchalantly tucked dress shirt or a turtleneck. The footwear game too refines itself; pulling more from minimalist sneakers like the air force one or more designer offerings like the triple s or rhythons. Kings of the belt chain and rings, the Insta Clout takes minimally styled pants and shirts and absolutely murders the acessory game. Puffer jackets and oversized vetements hoodies rule the winter season, allowing for a similarly minimal crisp street style. In the wake of the death of the west coast hypebeast, the Insta Clout god seeks to redefine the word cool. Now borrowing from the anti-fashion philosophy of designers like Demna Gvasalia, and the crisp modern stylings of J.W. Anderson and even Raf, this species makes looking like a poor goth office worker look more badass than you ever thought possible.

Mood Musicians: Nine Inch Nails, Death Grips, Lil Wayne, DJ Screw, Travis Scott

Examples: MogiMike, OGHypeMachine, /u/jirenpapi, /u/andreasLC

  • COMFY CORE

Favorite Brands: Olive Clothing, Story MFG, Edwina Horl, Pendleton, Converse, Anything big

Description: A stlye most often derived from more traditionally east Asian (read: Korean and Japanese) styling practices with touches of European suiting and casual-wear styles, Comfy Core is for the discerning and classy hobo. The Comfy Core breed is a hypochondriac of sorts, both painfully allergic to the color black, and to the feeling of clothes touching his skin, this species is more often than not dressed in the most over sized fitting clothes possible in all sorts of cozy earth tones. Comfy Core types are often found with the bucket hat signature to their breed, as well as carrying their garments in loose burlap or cotton sacks. The mortal enemy of the techninja, Comfy Core is reliant upon natural and technologically unadvanced fabrics like wool, linen, and raw cotton styled in a manner to relax rather than to function on a high level through every day wear and tear. The Japanese Americana and Comfy Core often trade styling tips when they get hand ground coffee together on the weekends, as they both take significant influence from 70's styles for their more exaggerated looks, and rely more on traditional timeless styles at any other time. Effortless, slouchy, and weird are word to live by for Comfy Core.

Mood Music: Sufjan Stevens, John Coltrane, Lamp, Milo, Sade, My Bloody Valentine

Examples: My own fits lol, Emarkay, /u/blovetopia, /u/mrnar

  • THRIFT STORE CORE

Favorite Brands: I'll give you one guess

Description: Thrift Store Core isn't so much one definite style as it is an attitude towards clothes. Your average thrift god will wear anything from women's silk shirts and fur coats, to the coolest graphic tees and Dickies on the rack. Despite the relative lack of cohesion, the Thrift Store Core poster always knows how to work with what they've got. Masters of the DIY, this breed tailors, trashes, crops and cuts many of their thrift store treasures to add attitude and flair, and sometimes to make something completely and altogether new. Often found three cigarettes deep into a pack of american spirits, or trawling through the isles of every goodwill and salvation army in a 20 mile radius, this species of user lives and dies at the alter of personal style. Unique, innovative, scrappy, and often the most down to earth of any fashion breed, the Thrift Store Core is for the individual.

Mood Musicians: Yung Lean/Sadboys, Lil Peep, Mac Demarco, Sonic Youth, Car Seat Headrest

Examples:/u/KenTries, Vicious Roy, Chopper, Jknowl3m

  • MISC AMAZING USERS

Favorite Brands: Issey Miyake, Maison Margiela, Ann D, CDG, some of the coolest shit

Description: I'd like to use this section to shout out a (predominantly female) group of posters who i feel have admirable and interesting styles but do not fall in to any of the traditional fashion categories or tribes i have laid out. I don't know enough about female fashion to properly give these users the time, attention, detail, or credit the deserve but I encourage all readers to use them as inspiration for finding your own voice and style outside of these categories i have listed. (and maybe inspiration to worry less about forcing the narrative of masculinity on yourself if thats not what you feel you were meant for).

Mood Musicians: Bjork, Vektroid, Tanya Tagaq, Rina Sawayama, Aphex Twin

Examples:Xinijia, Gracia/Rosen, Miruku, bbbunny, Kodiak

[DISCUSSION] What fragrances do you guys wear?

Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:14 PM PDT

Le Labo Another 13

Musky, airy scent that smells like fresh magazine paper. It's really simple & clean. Some people are anosmic to this one so you may not even smell it. When I first got it I could barely smell it. other people around me smelled it though. Be careful with spraying too much with this one. (I'd get a sample first with this one)

Le Labo Santal 33

A hotel I stayed in used this scent in their lobby and it smelled amazing. Had to get it after that. Noticed a lot of people wearing it in NYC too. The best woody scent out there imo although some say it smells like a pissy mattress in the opening. (I wouldn't recommend blind buying this one, get a sample first)

Margiela Jazz Club

Smells exactly what I'd imagine a jazz club smells like. Smoky, boozy and a bit on the sweeter side. Currently my favourite night/FW scent

Boss Bottled

Great everyday scent that gives off a cozy vibe (apple & cinnamon notes)

YSL La nuit de l'homme

Classic club/night fragrance and worthy of the hype although the new formulation is not all that great from my experience.

Gonna try Creed Aventus and some Byrendo frags next time I'm in a fragrance store. Maybe some CDG frags as well although I've heard some of them smell really fucking weird

[DISCUSSION] Best Stores to go to in LA?

Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:08 PM PDT

Going to LA soon for vacation and was wondering what the best places to go to were? I know of all the big names like Round Two, RiF, etc. I was looking for some good vintage spots, second hand designer places, or places that have archive raf, cdg, dior, etc. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

[DISCUSSION] What brands work best for short guys?

Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:50 AM PDT

I'm having trouble finding clothes that fit well on me. I went to almost all the recommended physical stores, here is what fitted and I ended up buying:

Zara(1 shirt/1 pair of joggers), Urban Outfitters(1 shirt), PACSUN(1 Jeans/1 Chinos), Zumiez(nothing), Vans(1 Sweatshirt), H&M(some things worked, but the quality was too bad), Forever(same as H&M), Champs(2 Jeans from CSG), Hollister(3 shirts that had absurdly good quality/fit), Calvin Klein(2 Jeans/2 Shirts), Guess(1 Shorts/1 Shirt), Banana Republic(nothing), Armani Exchange(nothing), True Religion(nothing). There is a lot of other shit that I tried and not worked, but it's too random to mention.

This may sound like success, but I have NOTHING that resembles streetwear but these clothes. Everything that I used to wear consists of very fitted navy/black shirt, jackets from Armani/CK and tight dark jeans. I'm missing a lot of basic stuff, half of my cops were too situational. Since "what fits" is subjective, I decided to take two pictures of what I got that I considered a "perfect fit". Ignore the color scheme or how things look together, it's only meant to show what I'm looking for: outfit 1, outfit 2.

Not looking for too much layering since I live in Florida(85F/29C all day).

I thought about shopping online(will prob do for UNIQLO), but I'm afraid I'll have to return too many times because of my height. My budget is U$50 max for shirts, U$120 max for jeans, U$150 max for jackets, U$80 max for sweatshirts and U$80 max for shorts.

I'm 5'4/110LB
