/r/Streetwear will be hosting an AMA with Mike Cherman on Thursday at 2pm PT!

Who is Mike Cherman?

Mike Cherman is well known as the founder of ICNY but has since moved on to work with virtually every name and in every role in contemporary menswear/streetwear. From designing logos for Kith & A$AP Worldwide to working with Nike and Pleasures amongst his many clients. In addition to running Chinatown Market, he spends his day to day working from his downtown LA design studio Six Ounce Studio helping brands, agencies and individuals realize their dreams, big and small. You can see the latest drop from Chinatown Market here (use code THANKYOU20 for 20% off): https://wanderset.com/brand/chinatown-market

How can I get involved?

Look out for the AMA thread on Thursday and post your questions in the comments! That's all there is to it!

[DISCUSSION] WDYWT thread format (decreasing quality of fits?)

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 06:36 PM PST

Sorry if this seems like an ignorant question, but does anyone else feel like the quality of the posts in the WDYWT thread is going down?

I know it's good to have some diversity in fits and it's great to see a lot of new faces, but I did enjoy being able to see some of the (in my opinion) better fits right away in the old format.

On the other hand, the new contest format does solve a number of issues, including people going in and downvoting everything on sight to raise their own fit.

I was thinking maybe the thread could be in contest mode for the first couple of hours, that way more fits get seen and have a higher chance to rise to the top. After those few hours, the thread would then resolve back to the regular format.

Thoughts about the WDYWT thread? Do you like the new format?

[DISCUSSION] In your opinion, who dictates fashion trends?

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 06:04 PM PST

Obviously there are a large number of hugely influential celebrities (see Kanye, Drake, Rhianna…etc) that move the fashion and streetwear needle, but what about brands and their creation of pieces in the first place? Or is it simply a cycle of influence?

It's interesting to see who & what influences and dictates the trends and also to what extent. Kanye wore Ultraboosts one year and they were in the spotlight for years. Not to mention him simply being seen in a Champion hoodie making the brand go from zero to hero. Russell Westbrook is a walking lookbook and makes the NBA stadium tunnels look like a runway, but doesn't seem to have nearly as much influence as a famous rapper.

On the other hand, brands and designers have to create first. Even Ikea had that tote bag that made the internet go crazy, although that might have been a half joke. Off White are doing collabs like nuts recently, while so many other brands have copied the Supreme box logo.

Would love to hear some opinions and thoughts

[DISCUSSION] Streetwear trends that came and went

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:15 AM PST

Hi everyone, long time lurker and even longer time history enthusiast and as I've been more or less into streetwear for a number of years I've seen a few trends come into the mainstream and then almost completely vanish from the outfits of the stylish among us.

Jogger pants (the chino and denim versions) and Nike roshe runs examples I can think of as they have came and went in the years since I've started paying attention to streetwear trends.

Anyone remember other trends that were big years ago in the streetwear scene but have faded into obscurity in a similar way? More interested in trends that were big for a longer amount of time and/or went mainstream but I'd love to hear the observations of the people in this sub, especially (but not limited to) those who have been into streetwear for a long time.
